Travel Tips

  • Prior to departure – to quickly reach local country towers:
    • AT&T customers, upon arrival power device on
    • Verizon customers, upon arrival press *288 send, option 2
  • Power device off when not in use
  • Disable roaming
  • Deactivate any “fetching” feature
  • Avoid Mi-Fi tethering, 1-800 calls to U.S.

 

AT&T Dialing Instructions

Helpful tips:

  • GMS phone assumes the country you are visiting. For example, if you are traveling to Italy, your phone will work like a local Italian wireless device.
  • Upon arrival, learn how to make local calls
  • Make all international calls using the international format (+, country code, number).
    • Example, dial +1, then the area code and number (U.S. country code is “1”)
    • In most GSM devices, holding down the “0” key will cause the + sign to appear
  • Emergency number varies depending on the country
  • When traveling abroad, turn on your phone, it will automatically search for a wireless network; registration usually occurs in 30-40 seconds
  • After your device registers, those with a data-centric device, but without an international plan/package, may receive a free SMS from AT&T advising the application data rate and where to go/call for more info
  • You will need a universal phone charger and plug adapters for the country you are visiting
  • In some countries, using a wireless phone will driving is prohibitedVoicemail Access
  • To retrieve voicemails:
  • For problems for questions while roaming outside the U.S., contact AT&T +1-916-843-4685 (free call from your wireless phone).

Voicemail Access

To retrieve voicemails:

  1. Press and hold the retrieval key on your device (typically the “1” key)
  2. Interrupt your personal greeting by pressing the “*” key
  3. Enter your voicemail password

If you reach the main voicemail system instead of your greeting, enter your 10-digit mobile number, then follow steps 2 and 3.

If you don’t know your password, reset using the following methods:

  • Call customer service
    • In the U.S.: Call 611 or 800-331-0500
    • Outside the U.S.: Call 916-843-4685
  • Change online at www.att.com/mywireless
    • Login
    • Under Quick Links, select Wireless Support
    • under Phone/Device Support select Reset Voicemail Password
    • Submit request to reset voicemail password. A text message will be sent to the phone with the new password

Voicemail Charges

Voicemail calls are charged as follows:

When the device is “on”:

  • Calls that you do not answer will be changed as an international roaming incoming call to your device
  • In addition, the foreign carrier’s routing of that call to AT&T voicemail system may generate an outgoing call charge from your devices U.S. location
  • These charges apply even if the caller disconnects from the voicemail system without leaving a message

When device is turned “off” or in “flight mode” and the wireless network is off:

  • Calls will go directly to your personal voicemail greeting there are no international roaming charges

Instructions for GSM:

Accessing your voicemail

  1. Dial your Verizon Wireless phone number in international format (+1 then your 10-digit number when in GSM mode)
  2. Interrupt your greeting by pressing #
  3. Follow the prompts to navigate through your voicemail box

U.S. or Other North American Numbering Plan (NANP) Destination

  • Roaming Country Exit Code + Destination Country Code + Area Code + Phone Number (Example: “+” +1 +212 + 123-4567
  • To check voicemail, dial your mobile number with the area code using the pattern above

Non- North American Numbering Plan (NANP) Destination

  • Roaming Country Exit Code + Destination Country Code + Area Code + Phone Number (Example: “+” +44 +123 + 567890 (e.g. calling UK)
  • Depending upon your device, press and hold “0” or “*” to display the “+” symbol.

Welcome text message

  • Upon arrival, you will receive a free text message letting you know how to make calls from your current location, the number for Customer service, and a reminder about the cost of data service.

  • Local Calls While in India to a Cellular Number: 0 + Cellular Number (e.g. 0-9322403567)
  • International Call While in India to the U.S. and to another International Destination: 00 + Country code + Telephone Number (e.g. 00 + 1 + Telephone Number)
  • Emergency Number While in India: 100
